Wire Wrapped Ring: "Peacock's Spying Eye"

This 1920s peacock eye cabochon in an adjustable warm antique copper wire ring is one of the spying eyes trained upon the Princess Swanwhite by her evil stepmother.

In the play “Swanwhite: A Fairy Drama” by August Strindberg (1909), a peacock is employed by an evil step-mother as a spy upon the princess Swanwhite:

“Little peacock, dear peacock! What seest thou, what hearest thou? Comes who? Who comes? Is it a little Prince? Is he handsome and neat? Canst thou see that with thy many blue eyes? (She lifts one of his feathers and looks earnestly into its eyes.)

“Shalt thou have thy eyes on us, thou nasty Argus? Shalt thou see into the hearts of two young people so that they do not beat too loudly—thou foolish jack! See, I pull the curtain. (She pulls a curtain, which hides the peacock but not the landscape outside…).”

I created this ring using an antique 1920s 18mm glass cabochon in peridot green over foil with a translucent black iris, and 18 gauge copper wire wrapped and woven with 26 gauge copper wire that I oxidized, waxed and buffed to create a dark but warm finish. Fully adjustable, the shank of the ring is embellished with beautiful spirals and the cabochon is caught in a graceful netting.

Note: Bohemia (now Czech Republic) peacock eye lampwork foil glass was made in several shapes of beads and cabochons and different color combinations as early as the late 19th century. The rarest is bright green over foil with a cobalt blue iris. Along with the color combo shown in this listing, eyes were royal blue over foil with a translucent black iris and even white over foil with a translucent red iris, among others.

The size of this ring is adjustable. The smallest size possible is 6 US (M UK, circum. ~51mm) and largest size recommended is 11 US (V 1/2 UK, circum. ~64mm). Please indicate in the Note to Seller the US size at which you would like the ring to be set for shipping.
